Do This Before You Move In With Friends

One easy talk can save a friendship. Here is what to go over before you share a home.

Moving in with friends is fun. You get to share a home with people you like. But you also share the money. And money is the hard part to talk about.

Here is the good news. One honest talk fixes most of it. Just have it before you move in, not after. It only takes about an hour.

Here is what to cover.

Talk about the bills first

Write down every bill you will share, like rent, power, water, and internet. A streaming plan or two goes on the list too.

For each bill, answer three questions:

  • Who looks after it?
  • How do you split it?
  • When is everyone’s share due?

One person looks after each bill. That is normal. The trick is to pick a pay-by day together, before the bill is actually due. Then everyone pays their share in time, and no one gets stuck covering it.

Pick one way to pay

Paying gets messy when everyone uses a different app. One friend likes Venmo, another likes Zelle, and a third keeps promising to get you next week.

So agree on one way and write it down. After that, paying your share is a two minute job, not a whole ordeal.

Agree on the shared stuff

Bills are the biggest piece, but not the only one. So talk through the rest while you are at it:

  • Who cleans what, and how often?
  • How do you split the food you all share?
  • What happens to a couch or a TV you buy together?

You do not need a rule for every little thing. You just need to agree on the ones that would really bother you.

Write it all down

A talk is easy to forget, but a note is not. Write down what everyone agreed to. Keep it where the whole house can see it.

This is not a contract, and there are no lawyers. It is just a shared memory. When a question comes up in month four, you already have the answer from month one.

This is not about trust

Here is the part people miss. Making a plan is not a sign that you do not trust your friends. It is the opposite.

Nobody plans to fall behind, and a hard month can happen to anyone. When the plan is already clear, a rough month is a small bump instead of a fight. You made the plan while everyone felt good. So it holds up later when things get tight.

That is a real kindness to everyone in the house.

Where Homera fits

This is why we built Homera. Your home agrees on the bills, the split, and the pay-by day one time. From then on, the app sends the reminders. Those notes come from Homera, not from a housemate. So nobody has to be the one who asks.

Everyone can see where things stand. And if someone needs a little more time, the bill owner finds out early and can help.

So have the talk. Write it down. Then let the app hold it for you. That is how the bills get paid, and how friends stay friends.

There is more where this came from.
